The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is looking for a missing City Clerk from central Kansas.
Jonathan Clayton, who has served as the Interim City Clerk for the city of Peabody since June, went missing on August 3rd. Now it seems that Clayton has been linked to missing Covid funds and money meant for the Community Foundation for the City of Mullinville in western Kansas.
The Kansas Department of Commerce awarded $425,000 in grant money to the Mullinville Community Foundation in 2022, while Clayton was Director of Economic Recovery and in charge of Covid funds. The president of the Mullinville foundation says about half of that money is missing. The Marion County Record has reported that the Mullinville Cemetery Board discovered in 2021 that $70,000 was missing from its bank accounts. Clayton was a board member at the time the funds disappeared.
In July the State of Kansas informed Peabody's Main Street Association that it needed to payback $740,000 in grant funds. Clayton was the person in charge of keeping track of where that money was spent.
Five days after he was last seen, Clayton sent an email to several people in Peabody blaming the Department of Commerce for the issues and stating that the message would only be sent after his passing.
The KBI and area law enforcement continue to investigate Clayton's disappearance.
