KGGF Turns 97 Today

Radio history was made on this day 97 years ago.

It was on this date in 1927 that KGGF signed on for the first time from Picher, Oklahoma. KGGF was one of the first stations in this part of the country, and according to period newspapers like the Picher King Jack, there was a lot of excitement around the station's opening. The station was started by local physician D. L. Connell to tell the story of lead and zinc mining to the country. KGGF's commitment to community involvement started from the beginning, with early programming including local band performances, bible studies and community events. The station was on the air during the lunch hour and then would sign back on in the evening. Originally broadcasting at 1010 kilohertz with 100 watts, the station gradually increased power over the years and eventually moved to our current 690 frequency. KGGF was sold in 1930 and was moved to South Coffeyville. A few years later studios were built in the Coffeyville Journal building. In 1950, a new transmitter site was built and the station's power was increased to our current 10,000 watts, making it one of the most powerful stations in the region.
