A report concerning a former Marion County police chief and newspaper has been released.
The report, released by Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett and Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson, details the August 11, 2023 raid by Marion County officers on the Marion County Record. The raid included the newspaper offices and the home of publisher Eric Meyer. Equipment and personal cell phones were seized.
Gideon Cody, Marion County Police Chief at the time, says the newspaper was being investigated on an identity theft charge or other crimes involving access to a local restaurant owner’s state driving record.
The report states one criminal charge will be filed against Cody later this week for alleged violation of interference with the judicial process, If convicted, Cody could face between seven to twenty-three months in prison or probation.
Prosecutors say there was no evidence of criminal intent among all others involved, including the journalists of the Marion County Record and several other Marion County law enforcement officers, however, several civil suits have been filed.
