Dry July for Southeast Kansas

Climate data from July is now available, and some parts of southeast Kansas had some of the driest conditions in years.

According to the Wichita office of the National Weather Service, this was the driest July since 2012 for Independence and Chanute.

Year-to-date precipitation across Kansas was mostly near to above average, although below-average conditions were observed across mainly central, south-central and southeast Kansas. Areas of drought improvement were noted across mainly central and southwest Kansas the past 4-8 weeks, with large areas of drought worsening across the state.

A transition to La Niña is expected later this year, which sometimes favors warmer and drier conditions during the summer and fall across Kansas.
