State and local dignitaries gather in Independence for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new addition to the Labette Health facility.

 

 The ceremony was held on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, to mark the official start of the construction of Phase Two of the Labette Health facility on Peter Pan Road. Governor Laura Kelly was on hand for the ground breaking. Kelly addressed the crowd, noting that Independence and Montgomery County have come a long way since losing Mercy Hospital in 2015.

 

Kelly says the City of Independence and Labette Health have done a lot to create momentum in rural health care in Kansas.

 

The planned construction includes a more than 12,000 square foot addition and a 1,000 square foot renovation that will remodel the existing ER and add a new rural health clinic and a visiting specialist clinic. The current facility opened on July 4, 2017.
