The U.S. Corps of Engineers is looking to buy land near Beaver Lake in northwest Arkansas.
Landowners around the lake gathered on Tuesday to hear what the USACE had to say about buying their land in order to protect the lake. The Corps is hoping to use the land in order to keep water quality high at Beaver Lake, which is the source of drinking water for one in five Arkansans. A representative from the Corps said in order to keep the quality of the water good, a vegetative buffer is needed around the lake.
Landowners say they are willing to listen but, the price must be right before they will sell. So far, no sales have been made.
