The Parsons Police Department responds to a report of a possible shooting.
At around 2:00am at the Prairie West Apartments, responding officers observed a suspicious vehicle speeding toward Labette Health. The officer followed the vehicle which pulled up to the ER. The driver, 26-year-old Kenyon L. Best, told the officer he had accidentally shot the victim. Officers retrieved a 9mm handgun and other evidence that suggested Best had accidentally shot the gun at the Prairie West Apartments and the bullet struck the victim who was nearby. The victim is a 24-year-old man from Columbus, who appears to be friends with Best.
Under Kansas law, a serious injury caused by the reckless discharge of a firearm is classified as an aggravated assault, which is a felony. Officers found evidence that Best had also been drinking. A second charge of possession of a firearm while intoxicated was also added. The victim was treated at the ER and then life-flighted to Freeman Hospital and was last known to be in critical but stable status.
