A Sunday afternoon house fire in Cherokee County leaves a home in ruins.
Fire fighters responded to the call around 1:45 yesterday afternoon about two miles southwest of the City of Cherokee, near the junction of 10th street and US-400.
When fire crews arrived on the scene, they discovered a two-story, wood-framed home engulfed in flames, with the first floor of the home nearing collapse. When the structure did collapse, the blaze grew in intensity due to the added fuel of wood shake shingles from the roof. Firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control. The occupants of the house were not home at the time, though two family pets perished in the fire.
No firefighters were injured.
