The Native American Fellowship, Inc. or NAFI receives a grant from the American Association of Retired Persons.
The South Coffeyville-based NAFI received the $4,000 AARP Community Challenge grant to build a community garden. Frybread Journeys Co-Host Amy Dollar says NAFI has big plans for the garden.
NAFI was one of 343 grant recipients nationwide. The new community garden will be located near their community building at 215 Oklahoma Street in South Coffeyville. NAFI Secretary Kris Crane says they hope to use the garden to allow their elders to pass along customs to new generations.
Crane adds that their plan for the garden includes at least six raised beds and three benches plus walkways and solar lighting. NAFI has nearly 1,000 members.
