Bystanders Rescue Kayaker from Drowning

A Missouri man is saved from drowning by a group of bystanders.

72-year-old Thomas Forehand of Joplin was kayaking on the James River just north of Galena, MO, on Saturday afternoon when his kayak flipped, causing him to fall overboard. Forehand then became pinned under a log. Four nearby men – identified as Dakota Bilyeu, Bobby Taylor, Justin DeAtley and Jimmy DeAtley – noticed the man was in distress and went into the water after him. Witnesses say the four worked to pull Forehand from the water and carried him to safety on the beach. Reports indicate Forehand was not breathing but was revived by first aid efforts. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated and released. Forehand was able to attend his family reunion the next day.

Stone County, Missouri, Sheriff Doug Rader credits the River Patrol for their quick response in getting Forehand to the hospital and called his four rescuers heroes.
