Drivers in Independence will soon have better roads in the downtown area.
The City is preparing to award a contract for a paving project on Main Street between 2nd and 8th Streets. Bids for the project have already been received by the city, but all of them came in for more than the original estimates. City engineer John Garris says, the reason for the increase is simply because materials are more expensive.
The City had considered re-bidding the project but decided against that course of action because the costs were unlikely to change. Garris adds that, once the work begins, it will take place mostly at night to minimize the effect of traffic.
