Federal Judge Finds No Discrimination in Dodge City Elections

A federal judge has ruled that there is no discrimination in the Dodge City City Commission elections.

U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren ruled that the city's practice of electing all of its city commissioners at-large instead of via a voting district does nto prevent minority candidates from holding office. The lawsuit was filed in 2022 by two Latino residents who argued the process violated the U.S. Constitution and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

In his decision Judge Melgren noted that a review of elections since 2014 showed candidates backed by the highest percentage of Latino voters won about half of the time. The population of Dodge City is about 64% Latino.
