A big street construction project gets underway today in Independence.

 Road crews will start work to widen North Penn Avenue from Morningside Drive north to the city limits. The street will remain open for travel during construction but slowdowns may occur. The street will need to be reduced to a single-lane at times. When that happens, there will be a pilot car to guide traffic.

The project is expected to be completed in early September and will allow for improved safety and traffic flow entering the city from US-75. Drivers are urged to use caution in the work zone.
