Cherryvale residents may save some money on permits for some projects.
At his last meeting as city administrator, Jonathan Booe explains that the ordinance is an attempt to avoid nickel and diming residents working on projects that also require excavation.
City Clerk Karen Davis says excavation permits are required for many reasons, one of which is to properly dispose of smelter contaminates whenever they're found. Council Member Steve Strickland says he's opposed to the whole concept of excavation permits.
The ordinance passed with Strickland as the only council member voting against it. Strickland was also the only member who voted against approving the region homeland security mitigation plan for another five years and also voted against abating two public nuisance properties, all of which passed. In other business, the council approved starting an emergency services vehicle fund to save for a new fire truck and approved temporary pay increases for City Clerk Karen Davis and her assistant until a new city administrator can be found.
