State Legislators Head Back to Topeka for Special Session

The Kansas Legislature is called back to Topeka to work on tax reform.

State legislators have tried several times this legislative session to pass meaningful tax reform. State Senator Virgil Peck says the issue isn't disagreement between Republicans and Democrats, but rather between legislators and the governor.

Governor Laura Kelly has called lawmakers back to Topeka for a Special Session to deal with tax reform. Kelly says she wants to pass meaningful tax relief, but that she won't sign a bill that puts the state's fiscal foundation at risk. Peck says the sticking point seems to be the number of tax brackets.

Lawmakers attempted to override Kelly's first veto of the tax bill but fell short by a few votes. The Governor's veto of the second version of the bill came after the legislature had already adjourned, so it was not possible to hold an override vote. The special Session is set to begin on June 18th.
