A group of Kansas wildlife biologists have discovered something in a Kansas river that they were not expecting.
The group from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Aquatic Invasive Species Crew were taking samples from the Kansas River near Kaw Point in April when they discovered an American eel.
The American eel is rarely seen in Kansas waters because the many dams in U.S. streams and rivers make it difficult for them to travel easily. The last time one was spotted in the state was in 2015.
The American eel is the only species of freshwater eel found in North America.
