KU Researchers Return to Bender Site

A team of archaeologists are back in southeast Kansas to investigate the former homestead of one of the area's most infamous families.

The team will once again visit the site between Cherryvale and Parsons where the Bender family cabin once stood. The Benders ran an inn in the 1870s, where they would murder and rob their guests. The archaeology team is led by Kansas Geological Survey forensic investigator and adjunct professor at the University of Kansas Dr. Blair Schneider. Schneider's team made their first visit to the site last summer to use ground-penetrating radar in an attempt to find the location of the original Bender cabin. Landowner Bob Miller says the team did quite a lot of work last summer.

Miller is a life-long resident of southeast Kansas and has been fascinated by the Bender story since he was a boy. He purchased the property in 2020 with the hopes of unraveling some of the mystery surrounding the notorious killers.
