The Parsons City Commission agrees to consider a name change for a local park.
At this week's meeting, commissioners were asked by resident Sontana Johnson to change the name of Glenwood Park to Frederick Douglass Park. Johnson wants the name change in memory of Douglass School that stood on the site from 1908 until the early 1960s. Johnson says the name change would honor a part of Parsons history.
This was the second meeting where Johnson raised the subject. Commissioners were willing to discuss the name change. Kevin Cruse stated he didn't believe the change was warranted. Commissioner Tom Shaw says he's concerned it might make residents feel as though they are unwelcome.
Shaw stressed that ALL people are welcome in all Parsons parks. The commission did agree to take up the issue in their next work session and to include it on the agenda for the June 3rd meeting.
