With the recent adoption of a local ordinance allowing the use of registered golf carts and utility vehicles (UTV’s) on city streets, the City of Independence is partnering with the Independence Country Club to offer a one-stop registration event where owners can satisfy all the regulatory requirements for their vehicles.
The event is scheduled Tuesday, May 21, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Country Club clubhouse, 2824 Country Club Circle.
Registration of golf carts, UTV’s and micro-utility vehicles requires a vehicle inspection, which will be offered onsite by the Independence Police Department. Per ordinance, additional requirements for registration include:
- A valid driver’s license
- Proof of liability insurance for the vehicle (homeowner’s insurance does not cover a golf cart or UTV on the roadway)
- An orange triangular pennant or flag (minimum 6” wide and 12” long) affixed to the top of a flexible pole attached to the back of the vehicle, with flag height at least 4 feet above seat
- Payment of a $25 registration fee.
Owners of approved vehicles will receive a registration sticker to be displayed on the vehicle.
Vehicle owners unable to attend the May 21 event may obtain an application for vehicle registration at City Hall, submit the completed application and schedule an appointment for vehicle inspection. Annual re-registration is required. A registration application is available on the City’s website.
The complete City code (Ordinance No. 4024) pertaining to street-use of golf carts and utility vehicles can be found on the City’s website.
