South Coffeyville Considers Partnership for Religous Education

The South Coffeyville School Board is considering adding a voluntary release-time religious education program.

At last night's meeting, board members heard a presentation from Pastor Jason Swindell, who is working to start the program at the Methodist church across the street from the school. The program would function like an elective, and Swindell says they'd like to use a bible curriculum offered through Lifewise Academy.

The proposed program will be for 2nd through 5th grade students. Interested students would need parental approval, and the program would not be funded through the school or on school property. The board tabled a vote on the program to gather more information and to see what will happen with a state bill that looks to affirm a 1950s supreme court case that allows for release time programs such as this. In other business, the board approved several fundraisers and next year's calendar which moves spring break one week later to conform with the rest of Oklahoma. Members also took a look at water damage that happened again to the elementary school due to recent rains and discussed prevention options.
