A usually quiet board room was full last night as family members of the Caney wrestling team showed up to support the team and to ask USD 436 members to help solve safety issues concerning the current wrestling room.
With growing numbers in the boys wrestling program, and with the addition of a girls wrestling program, the size of the room is now inadequate to handle the amount of students using it, whether for wrestling, weight lifting, and even for cleaning and sanitation supplies and medical equipment.
USD 436 Superintendent Blake Vargas says the wrestling program has been an important part of the district for many years....
As temporary space solutions were discussed, a special meeting of the USD 436 school board was also set for this coming Monday to discuss the possible continuance of a bond scheduled to come off the books within the next year. Vargas says the continuance of the bond would help more than just the wrestling program.
Programs being shuffled throughout the campus include not only the wrestling and weight lifting programs, but music education programs like band and choir.
The special USD 436 meeting will be held Monday, May 20th at 6:00 p.m. At the Board of Education building, 700 East Bullpup Boulevard in Caney.
