Local Firefighters Assist in 20,000 Acre Fire

Local firefighters return after assisting in the wildfires in Northeastern Kansas.

On Sunday, 12 members from local fire departments, including members from the Coffeyville Fire Department responded to a large grass fire in Riley and Pottawatomie County. The Burkland and Axtell Fire started on Saturday. High winds and dry conditions quickly caused the fire to burn out of control. Over three days over 20,000 acres burned and two houses were destroyed.

Fire crews from all over the State of Kansas responded to assist. Crews from Montgomery County arrived on Sunday afternoon and returned home yesterday. Fire crews from Coffeyville, Independence Rural, Liberty, Cherryvale Rural, Havana and Neodesha responded as part of the local Task Force.
