Montgomery County Commissioners Hear From Citizens Concerned With Road Closure

About 20 Montgomery County citizens were present at yesterday' Montgomery County Commission meeting to air their concerns about the recent road closure of County Road 6200 near the junction of US-400 and US-169 just north of Cherryvale.

Commissioners voted to close the road at their April 1st meeting due to an engineer's report. The report stated that a low water bridge on the road was unsafe and needed to be closed immediately. Commissioner Robert Bever explained last week that the county did not really have much of a choice when it came to closing the bridge.

The report from the engineer said the county has two options: to remove and replace the bridge or to close it. The County Commission decided it would be too expensive to replace the bridge. But, area resident Ruth Ellsworth tells the commission that this is the reason people pay taxes.

Another area resident Rachel Henry spoke at length and provided commissioners with photos and diagrams of the area. Henry says another concern is response time for emergency vehicles.

Commissioners acknowledged resident concerns. Bever says the cost to replace the bridge would be very high.

Commissioners agreed to revisit the issue to see if some compromise or accommodation could be made.
