Spring Storms and Pet Care

Springtime in Kansas means being prepared for severe weather.

Becky Barnhardt from Coffeyville Friends of Animals reminds pet owners that we need to remember our furry friends when it comes time for spring weather. Barnhardt says weather can be a big stress, especially for dogs.

If you have a pet that is frightened by loud noises such as thunder, simple steps like closing blinds and drapes may help. If your dog becomes destructive, you can place him in a comfortable crate with bedding, blankets and toys. Barnhardt says it's also important to make sure your pet can be identified in case he gets lost.

In the event that you must evacuate your home or go to a shelter, make sure you pack a bag for your pet as well. Remember that not all storm shelters accept pets, so make sure you find one that will allow your dog or cat.
