Apartment Fire in Chanute

 

An apartment complex in Chanute is significantly damaged after a fire early this morning.

 

According to the Chanute Fire Department, this morning at at 1:22 a.m. the Chanute Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Cornerstone Apartment Complex at 1610 W. 4th St. Upon arrival, the department reported the West side apartment units were fully involved with fire coming through the roof. The apartment complex sustained considerable damage throughout. The fire is under control currently and citizens are encouraged to stay away from the area. Firefighters are still on the scene.

 

The Chanute Fire Dept received assistance from the Parsons, Iola and Thayer Fire Departments. The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office is on the scene as they work to determine the cause and origin of the fire. Residents have been displaced and there are reports of injuries.

 

The Red Cross has set up a shelter at Central Park Pavilion to help those in need of shelter and assistance. Those wanting to help residents of the Cornerstone apartments may contact the Red Cross.

All are asked to stay away from this area so first responders can continue to do their job and so that the area does not become congested.
