Special Election for Cherokee Nation Approved

A special election is on the way in June for the Cherokee Nation.

Earlier this week, the Council of the Cherokee Nation approved a special election to allow Cherokee citizens to decide on whether to call for a constitutional convention. The Cherokee Nation Constitution states that a question of whether to call a constitutional convention must be submitted to the citizens of the Cherokee Nation at least once every 20 years during a general or special election.

The Council passed the resolution during its committee meeting in February and passed it out of full Council on March 11. The question for Cherokee citizens will appear on a ballot during a special election on June 15th.
