Local Airports Receive State Funding for Improvements

Local airports in Chanute and Iola will receive funding from the state to complete improvements.

The Martin Johnson Airport in Chanute is set to receive $180,000 for phase 2 of a fencing project to install chain-linnk with a barbed wire wildlife barrier. The Allen County Airport at Iola will receive more than $650,000 for the design and construction of a drainage and earthwork project for a taxiway.

The funding is part of $14 million through the Kansas Airport Improvement Program. The southeast Kansas airports are two of 37 small airports across the state to benefit from this round of funding. The selected projects focus on pavement restoration, safety, and air ambulance accessibility. Local matching funds were required.

Kansas Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed says that programs like this help Kansans have access to renewed and reliable transportation options available to them in every region of the state.
