Severe Weather Preparedness Week Starts Today

Today marks the start of the National Weather Service's Severe Weather Preparedness Week.

Each day has a different theme, and today's today focuses on general preparedness.  As storm season approaches, the National Weather Service recommends everyone has multiple way to receive alerts when severe weather strikes the area.   Tools like a NOAA Weather Radio can wake you up if thunderstorms or tornadoes come through in the middle of the night.  You can also sign up for KGGF text alerts here and select your county and what alerts you'd like to be notified for.  It's also important to identify where you would go in a tornado emergency.  A list of area shelters is available below:

Caney

  • Christian Church – 100 E 4th
  • Liberty Church – 200 E 4th
  • United Methodist – 114 W High

Cherryvale

  • Library – 329 E Main St

Coffeyville

  • Community Elementary School – 102 Cline Rd (Enter doors by multi-purpose room)
  • Field Kindley High School – 1110 W 8th St (Enter from the north side of the gym)
  • First Church of God – 5th and Cline
  • St Paul’s Lutheran Church – 506 W 9th

Independence

  • Civic Center (If Advised) – 410 N Penn Ave
  • Judicial Center Basement – 300 E Main St
  • Police Department – 120 N 6th St

You may want to consider keeping a go-bag packed with a change of clothes and shoes or boots if you plan to use a community shelter.  If you have a shelter at home, make sure it's stocked with a few essentials to keep you comfortable, including a light source and a battery-powered radio.  KGGF has been recognized by the National Weather Service as a Weather Ready Nation Ambassador and provides severe weather coverage for severe thunderstorm warnings and continuous coverage for tornado warnings.
