Traffic Light Changes In Downtown Independence

 The Independence City Commission held their first meeting of the new year last (Thursday) night and some new changes are on the way.

 On the mind of many residents is what to do with the flashing traffic lights in the downtown area. City Engineer John Garris says the flashing lights have made a difference in traffic.

Commissioner Tim Emert gave voice to the thoughts of many residents about the lights.

Garris provided commissioners with four options for the intersections. Commissioners chose to replace the traffic lights with four-way stops to improve traffic flow through the area. In other business at this week's meeting, new commissioner Scott Smith was sworn in. Smith joins commissioners Dean Hayse and Tim Emert. Emert was chosen to serve as mayor and Smith was selected as vice-mayor. The next Independence city commission meeting will be held on January 25th
