Self Care During The Holidays

Cold and flue season is well underway and that means its time to think about ways to boost the immune system to try and stay healthy.

Dr Michael Garko says that our immune system can change as we get older.

There are steps that can help boost immune health. The Center for Disease Control suggests a focus on eating a balanced diet that includes fresh fruit and vegetables. Practicing good hygiene and hand-washing to reduce the transmission of germs, and reducing stress. Garko says a good way to reduce stress is getting enough sleep.

Other ways to deal with stress include relaxing activities such as meditating, listening to music, or writing in a journal. Physical activity is another strategy to manage stress and may also reduce the risk of some chronic diseases that can weaken your immune system. However, even by doing all of those things, you can still catch the flu, although your illness may not last as long and you may not feel as bad.
