Adults and Social Isolation and Loneliness: Effects and Solutions

As the autumn days get shorter as we get closer to winter and the holiday season, feelings of loneliness and isolation may increase, especially among older adults.

Chief Medical Officer of United Health Care Dr. Amit Shah says there are several causes for adult loneliness and isolation.

Isolation and loneliness can have serious effects not only on mental health, but on physical health as well. Loneliness can cause an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and dementia among older people. Dr. Shah says it's important for people to maintain their social involvement in order to reduce these risks.

Dr. Shah adds that if you know someone who may be experiencing symptoms of loneliness and isolation, you should attempt to keep them involved. Check in on your older relatives and neighbors, and invite them to activities. If you are experiencing isolation and loneliness, try talking about your feelings to a friend, family member, health professional or counselor or consider visiting places where you can just be around other people – for example, a park, the cinema or a cafe.
