Lawsuit Filed Over Toddler's Death

The family of a two-year-old fatally shot by police during a standoff in Baxter Springs in 2022 files a federal lawsuit.

According to Kansas authorities, two-year-old Clesslyn Crawford was shot by a Joplin police officer during a confrontation on March 26, 2022, in Baxter Springs. KBI records show Crawford’s 37-year-old father, Eli Crawford, shot and killed the girl’s mother, 27-year-old Taylor Shutte, and fired at officers for more than three hours before fatally shooting himself.

The Wichita Eagle reports the girl’s family has filed suit against the cities of Baxter Springs and Joplin, along with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department and the officer who fired the fatal shot. The lawsuit says the departments were responsible for the girl’s death.

No comment has been made by any law enforcement agency.
