Kelly Vetoes Transgender Athlete Bill

Governor Laura Kelly has vetoed a bill banning transgender athletes from playing on women’s sports teams.

House Bill 2238 would require state athletic teams to be designated as either “male,” female” or “coed/mixed.” Supporters say the creation of the “Fairness in Women Sports Act” will level the playing field for women’s sports.

Kelly says the Kansas State High School Activities Association was set up to ensure nobody has an unfair advantage on the playing field, and the Legislature should let KSHSAA do its job. Kelly adds the bill would harm the mental health of students.

Kansas Senator Virgil Peck says Title Nine provides an avenue for women's sports.

The bill passed the Senate 28-11 earlier this month, which is veto-proof and passed 82-40 in the House, which is two votes shy of the 2/3rds majority needed to override a veto.
