A parking lot in downtown Independence will close this week for repairs.

According to the City of Independence, the parking lot just south of Main and Pennsylvania Avenue, just behind Big Cheese Pizza will be closed tomorrow until Friday for sewer work and manhole replacement. There will be no public parking available in the lot during that time. In addition, residents near sewer lines may notice a plastic-like smell this week due to sewer improvements. An ingredient called “styrene” causes the smell, and it is harmless in the small quantities used. If you notice the smell, you may want to check your sewer connections and drain traps to make sure they have water in them in order to block the odor.
