Independence Man Arrested On Drugs And Weapons Charges

 

 An Independence man was arrested on drugs and weapons charges after a brief standoff in Indy Friday afternoon.

 The standoff began just before 2:30, when deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office along with Officers from Independence Police Department, arrived at 600 South 15th to serve three felony warrants on 49-year-old Richard Asher. Asher and a weapon were observed inside the residence. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team and the Crisis Negotiators Team were contacted. After Asher was contacted via phone, and after 60 minutes of negotiations, Asher exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident. Asher was transported to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections.

 In a search of the residence, detectives located methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and an illegal firearm. He's been charged with, distributing meth, possession of marijuana, distributing or possessing drug paraphernalia for illegal use, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence, possession of a shotgun with a barrel less than 18 inches, and possessing a firearm while a fugitive of justice.
