US Red Meat Production Down

In 2023, consumers can anticipate a greater availability of pork, chicken, and turkey, but less beef is expected. This is according to data from the USDA’s December 2022 Slaughter report which shows red meat production is down by 7%. For producers, this means that fed cattle and feeder steer prices in 2023 are raised on firm demand, according to the report.

Additionally, the report says that pork and chicken may fill the void left by beef supplies, as supplies are expected to decline by 3 pounds per person. Conversely, pork consumption and supplies are expected to climb about 1 pound per person in 2023, and broiler meat is projected to increase by about a half pound, which is at a slower pace due to the bird flu outbreak. Turkey will rise over 1 pound, the first increase in 7 years.
