City of Independence Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr

The City of Independence celebrated Martin Luther King Day with a full community celebration full of performances and community on Sunday.

The event took place at Independence High School, and featured a featured speaker in Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree, as well as addresses from Chamber President Lisa Wilson and City Mayor Louis Ysusi.

Ysusi also made a proclamation as mayor to officially classify January 15th as Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Day in the city of Independence.

The community celebration saw numerous performances from talented music groups around the area, such as the Independence Community College Chorale, the Independence High School and Community Jazz Band, and the memorial Community Choir.

Wilson also awarded the Spirit of Unity Award, which is given to an individual who went above and beyond to represent the values of community and service.

The celebration event will become an annual community honoring of Dr. King with expanded resources for both the city of Independence and the Diversity Task Force.
