King Lake In Emporia Now Has Trout

Emporia State University's King Lake has trout for the first time.

The lake, which opened to the public for fishing in April 2022, now joins other lakes and ponds across Kansas that offer winter fishing opportunities through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Park’s trout stocking program. Approximately 1000 trout were introduced into King Lake.

Other areas that offer winter trout fishing include Le Clere pond in Coffeyville, Mined Land Unit #30 near Oswego and Lake Tanko in Cherryvale. A trout permit is required to fish for trout in Kansas during trout season.  Trout season runs from November 1st to April 15th.  Trout can still be fished for after April 15th without a trout permit, but the limit of 5 trout per day and 15 in possession is still active.
