2022 Kansas Crop Report Reflects Drought Impact

Crop production in Kansas was down across the board in 2022. With the only exception of other hay production, which was up only slightly from 2021. According to the 2022 Annual Crop Production Summary by the National Agricultural Statistics Service Corn for grain production was estimated at 511 million bushels, which is down 32% from 2021. Yeilds were also down by 24 bushels per acre from last year.

As a consequence of the drought much of the corn planted was converted to silage, which saw an overall rise in production of 7%, however, yields were also down 7 tons per acre for silage at 11 tons per acre on average from last year.

The lowered production due to the drought also diminished grain and hay stocks in Kansas. Corn and Wheat stored in all positions fell in 2022 by more than 20%. While Sorghum and Soybeans stored fell by more than 30% from 2021 and in fact Sorghum stored on-farm was down over 54% in 2022. The only grain that increased in storage was oats, which was up by 19% over 2021 levels.
