Midwest Consumer Price Index Shows Little Change

 

Food prices continue to rise slightly while the energy index decreased for the month of November in the Midwest.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, prices overall for the Midwest Region fell .2% in November, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers.

Food prices rose .2% last month with indexes for fruits and vegetables and bakery products contributing most to the increase with an over 1% rise. Foods such as meats, poultry, fish, and eggs dropped by .8%.

The energy index decreased by 3.7% last month, but compared to November 2021 energy prices increased 11% over the year. Prices paid for gasoline went up 12.2% while natural gas increased 12% and electricity costs advanced 7.8% over the year.

All items less food and energy rose 0.1% last month. Some items increasing in price were cost of residence by .7%. Education and communications costs saw a .8% rise. Notably, the price of used cars and trucks fell 2.9% and since November of 2021, prices paid for used vehicles have declined 3.5% in the Midwest area.
