An investigation is underway by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Kansas Department of Corrections into a homicide that took place Friday night at the Lansing Correctional Facility.
Initial investigation reports say correction officers were called Friday, just before 8:30 p.m., to a two-person cell. 62-year-old Gary Raburn appeared to have been attacked and strangled and was found unresponsive in his cell. The KBI was contacted and arrived just after 9:30 p.m.
By state law, the KBI investigates the deaths of prisoners in the custody of Kansas jails and prisons, unless the inmate who dies is being regularly attended to by a physician, or the death is ruled natural by autopsy.
Corrections officers and EMS responded and attempted life-saving measures, however, Rayburn was declared deceased at approximately 9:30 p.m.
An autopsy will be conducted and the investigation is ongoing. A suspect has been identified, and charges are pending.
