Independence Begins Groundwork for New Sports Complex

The city of Independence has been awarded a grant to develop a new Central Park Sports Complex.

City commissioners accepted a grant of over $2 million to support Phase 1 development of the proposed multi-use complex on North Park Boulevard.

Independence City Finance Director Lacey Lies says that a major source of inspiration for the complex was the startling statistic that Montgomery County is one of the unhealthiest in the state.

The Phase 1 construction of the complex will feature a socer complex, a four-plex and baseball and softball fields, a fitness court, lighting and parking improvements, and a 1.1 mile hiking trail adjacent to the complex. Phase 2, which will come at a later date, will add baseball fields, basketball courts, pickleball courts, and batting cages.

Campaign Committee Member Ian Oliver says that as a former athlete that competed in similar complexes, the current facilities Independence offers just aren't good enough.

Lies expects the bid will be awarded to a contractor later this month, with the initial construction of Phase 1 for the Central Park Sports Complex anticipated in March of this year.
