Kansans To Watch For In The NFR in Vegas

There are many local Kansans competing in the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

Coffeyville’s own team-roping heeler Jake Long and his partner Clay Smith tied for 12th place in the 6th round yesterday. The team goes into the 7th round tonight 14th in the average with 4 head.

Local Rodeo Cowboy, JL Tunison of Belknap says to watch out for some other local Kansas cowboys like Buddy Hawkins who grew up just north of Sedan and now lives in Stevensville, TX. Hawkins who is a heeler and his partner won the average last year at the NFR in the team-roping event. This year Hawkins and his partner Andrew Ward are 6th in average on four head. Hawkins ranks 3rd in the world standings with $175,514 earned.

Bareback rider Jesse Pope who is from Waverly, Kansas is another to watch Tunison said. Pope was just out of the money in a 3-way tie for 8th place yesterday with a score of 85. He is the leader in average with 517 points.  Pope is #1 in the world with $262,063, almost $55k more than 2nd place Cole Reiner.
