Local Cities Receive Grants To Improve State Highways

Independence, Parsons, Fort Scott, Baxter Springs, Madison, and 29 other cities across Kansas have been selected to receive grants totaling $28.65 million for improvements to the State Highway System that is located within city boundaries. The grants are administered through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s City Connecting Link Improvement Program. CCLIP is a component of the state’s transportation program IKE, which saw an increase in funding for CCLIP by more than $10 million over previous years. This is due to federal funds coming to Kansas as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Legislation.

There are 3 categories of CCLIP projects: Surface Preservation which extends the life of the pavement; Pavement Restoration, which either replaces or rehabilitates pavement; and Geometric Improvements, which improves roadway turn lanes, intersections, or modifications of lane configurations. Independence will get $800,000 for the surface preservation of US 160; Parsons will get 1.25 million for pavement restoration of US 59; Baxter Springs will get $1 million for pavement restoration of US 69A; Fort Scott will get $1.5 million for Geometric Improvements of US 54 and Madison will get $1.5 million for Geometric Improvements of K 58.

KDOT received 54 applications requesting $38 million last year from Kansas Cities.
