An Independence man barricades himself inside the bedroom of an apartment.

Last night at around 9:30pm, Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the Garden Walk Apartments to assist the Independence Police Department. IPD had received calls that Steven Shanstra had entered one of the apartments with a sword. While trying to make contact with Shanstra they heard him barricading the bedroom door and refused to come out.

The county Emergency Response Team responded to the scene and members of the Crisis Negotiations Team arrived and started establishing contact with Shanstra via phone. By midnight CNT was able to talk Shanstra out of the apartment where he was placed in custody. Shanstra was transported and booked into the Montgomery County Department of Corrections on three felony warrants.
