KBI Warns of Scam Involving KBI Phone Number

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is warning people of a scam where the KBI phone number has been spoofed. The KBI says caller ID spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the number on a caller ID display to disguise their identity. Callers do this to appear more trustworthy so that someone might share their personal information.

The KBI offers some tips to help protect anyone from these scams. The KBI might call in relation to a case, or arrange an interview, but will not make a call requesting a social security number, date of birth, account number or any other personal information. Make sure to never give personal information out over the phone unless you have initiated a phone call to an agency or service. If a caller is acting suspiciously, hang up and look up the number to verify its authenticity.
