Experts Urge Caution Before Baling Failed Soybeans

With the continuing drought in some areas, many farmers are considering baling their failed soybean crops, but there might be a problem with that according to K-State Research and Extension Wildcat District Crop Agent James Coover.

Coover says if you've used herbicides on a failed crop, that could be a problem.

Coover says many of the same herbicides that are used on other crops like corn do have haying as a possibility on the labels. In some cases, the reason for differences with soybean herbicides may have to do with animal and meat safety, but Coover says it's largely to do with not being tested for that use.

In addition, Coover says producers shouldn't expect any official word from the state on this issue.

Soybeans can also be silaged but it's not as palatable as corn silage for cattle. Coover says producers have to get creative during these challenging drought conditions.
