Kansas State Representative Doug Blex called the failure of the “Value Them Both” Amendment to the state constitution “a missed opportunity,” saying he felt the vote failed because the amendment wasn't written as clearly as it should have been.
The amendment failed with only 41 percent of Kansas voters supporting it with 59 percent voting against it. If passed, the amendment would have changed the state constitution to specify that there is no constitutional right to an abortion in Kansas, nor is there a right to have the state fund an abortion. The amendment would have given the legislature the ability to pass stricter abortion laws in the state. Blex said he doesn't sense any appetite in the legislature to take up a similar amendment any time soon.
