The City of Independence participates in the FEMA CRS program that requires the city to manage the floodplain and help reduce and avoid flood damage to insurable property. By participating in the program, citizens in the floodplain can receive a reduction in their flood insurance.

If your property is in the 100-year floodplain, the following activity requires a building permit and State of Kansas-FEMA approval.

Installation of a Fence; Dirt work that could change the flow of water; Adding on to your home; Building a garage or shed; Remodeling, new siding, or a new roof.
