Caney City Council Announces Turnover In City Leadership

The top three administrative positions in Caney city government will be new.

According to the Montgomery County Chronicle, City Clerk Debbie Morrison tendered her resignation to the council and it will be effective July 29th.

In a vote of 6-2, the city administrator’s contract was not extended by city councilors. City administrator Fred Gress was not aware that a decision would be made, and the issue was not listed on the agenda in advance of Monday’s meeting. He was not part of the two executive sessions in which councilors conferred about Gress’ job performance. As per protocol regarding employees’ privacy rights, no reason was given publicly for not granting Gress an extension. He will continue his regular duties until Sept. 8th.

Finally, the city of Caney is transitioning from an elected city treasurer to a council-appointed position. A decision that was approved by voters several years ago. Therefore, at Monday’s meeting councilors agreed on the city treasurer’s job description and will post the position soon.
